Venous Disease

Venous Disease is an impairment of blood flow back to the heart.

Causes are:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – blood clot in veins
  • Varicose Veins – dilated, thickened, elongated, and twisted vessels that do not properly control blood flow
  • Both of these can restrict or totally obstruct blood flow

Symptoms to watch for:

  • aching
  • easily tired legs
  • heaviness in the legs
  • swelling
  • skin changes – darkening or developing a rash like area
  • numbness

Treatment options:

  • Sclerotherapy – injecting veins with a solution which causes the vein to close
  • Microsclerothtrapy – similar to sclerotherapy, but uses different techniques, especially effective with spider veins
  • Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) – a thin catheter is placedĀ  caused the vein, then head is applied through the catheter causing the vein to collapse – most often used to treat larger varicosities
