Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Mitral Valve Regurgitation

This condition is diagnosed by a mitral valve (found in the heart) that does not close properly, thus allowing blood to flow back into the heart. Because the symptoms of this condition progress slowly, it may not always be apparent when a patient has developed this condition. Some symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath – especially when performing activities or while lying down
  • Feeling fatigued or lightheaded
  • Cough – especially while lying down
  • Heart palpitations
  • Swelling in the feet and/or ankles
  • Excessive need to urinate

For less severe cases, treatment may not be necessary. However, for more significant cases, our treatment options involve using medication to relieve fluid build up in the heart, valve repair or replacement surgery, or interventional treatment. With interventional treatment, an EVALVE mitraclip is inserted to reduce the effects of this condition.
