A Simple Test That Tells Us a Lot

Electrocardiogram (EKG) Testing in Florence, AL

An electrocardiogram, usually called an EKG or ECG, records the electrical activity of your heartbeat. It's quick, painless, and one of the first tools we reach for when you're having chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or a heart condition we're keeping an eye on. Small sensors placed on your skin pick up the timing and strength of each heartbeat, and the results print out as a wave pattern Dr. Naidu can read in minutes.

At Cardiovascular Institute of the Shoals, every EKG is reviewed personally by Dr. Naidu, not sent off to a lab for someone else to interpret days later. That means you get answers the same day, often before you've even left the building. If something looks off, we can move straight into next steps like a Holter Monitor or Treadmill/Stress Test without sending you somewhere else first.

If you've noticed heart palpitations, unexplained fatigue, or you simply want a baseline check on your heart's rhythm, an EKG is a good place to start. Request an appointment and we'll get you in quickly.

What to Expect

How EKG Testing Works

An EKG takes about five to ten minutes in our office and requires no needles, no sedation, and no recovery time. You'll lie down while small adhesive sensors, called electrodes, are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. Each electrode picks up the tiny electrical signals your heart produces with every beat. A machine translates those signals into a wave pattern on paper or a screen, and Dr. Naidu reviews it right away.

What an EKG Can Show

An EKG can reveal an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), signs of a past or ongoing heart attack, an enlarged heart chamber, or problems with blood flow to the heart muscle. It's also a standard part of evaluating unexplained symptoms like dizziness, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath. On its own, an EKG doesn't diagnose every heart condition, which is why we sometimes pair it with additional testing, such as an Echocardiogram or Vascular Ultrasound, to get the full picture.

Who Should Get One

We recommend an EKG for anyone with new or ongoing symptoms like heart palpitations, chest pain, fainting spells, or a family history of heart disease. It's also common as a pre-procedure check before certain treatments, or simply as part of an annual physical if you're managing a condition like hypertension or coronary artery disease. There's no special preparation needed. Just wear a shirt that's easy to remove or unbutton, and try to avoid caffeine right before your appointment since it can temporarily affect your heart rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an EKG hurt?

No. An EKG is completely painless. The electrodes simply stick to your skin and don't send any electrical current into your body; they only read the signals your heart is already producing. Some patients feel a small pull when the adhesive pads are removed at the end, similar to peeling off a bandage, but that's the extent of it.

How long does it take to get EKG results?

At our office, Dr. Naidu reviews your EKG personally, often within minutes of the test. If we see something that needs a closer look, we'll talk with you about next steps that same day, whether that's additional testing or starting treatment. You won't be left waiting on results from an outside lab.

Can an EKG detect a heart attack that already happened?

In many cases, yes. An EKG can show patterns consistent with a prior heart attack, even one that went unnoticed at the time. If your EKG shows anything concerning, we'll walk you through what it means and what, if anything, we recommend doing next.
